From September 2013 all young people in England will be required to stay in learning until the end of the academic year in which they turn 17 (currently, compulsory education in England currently ends at 16) and from September 2015 until the end of the academic year in which they turn 18

Raising the Participation Age means that young people will be able to choose one of the following forms of learning:

  • Remain in education, such as school, college or home education
  • Do work-based learning, such as an Apprenticeship
  • Attend part-time education or training if they are employed, self-employed or are volunteering for more than 20 hours a week.
