Were you born on or after 1st September 1996?  Then the following affects you ……

The law has changed so that all young people will be required to stay in learning longer.  This is being referred to as ‘Raising the Participation Age’ (RPA).  Depending upon which year you sit your final exams you will be required to stay in learning until you are aged 17 or 18.

Can you just take a job?
Only if the company employing you offers:

  • Training towards gaining an accredited qualification as part of an Apprenticeship or
  • Accredited learning alongside your work provided by the employer or the opportunity to enrol on an accredited programme for the equivalent of one day per week.

You also have the option to become self-employed or take a voluntary job for 20 hours or more a week, but this will need to be combined with part-time education or training for one day per week.
