Curriculum Vitae (CV) is the Latin term for 'the course of one's life. A CV is used when job seeking to provide an outline of the applicant's personal, educational and work history.

Your CV is usually your very first contact with an employer, so you need to make a good job of it - first impressions count.

Many employers ask you to send a CV when applying for an advertised vacancy. However, the most common use for a CV is in speculative job hunting, where you put together a list of companies and organisations that you think may have vacancies in the type of job you are seeking.

A CV is a way of introducing yourself to such employers. Many job seekers don't wait for the employer to come to them; they go to the employer via their CV.

The traditional way to use a CV and covering letter is by sending a paper copy of each in an envelope. However, the modern approach is to send these by email or as a word attachment. If applying for an advertised vacancy check which method the employer prefers.
